WorkshopsSession A – Thursday October 29th 9:00 am - 3:45 pmDr. Robert Putnam - Using Functional Behavior Assessment to Design Effective Positive Behavior Support InterventionsThis session will focus on the behavioral assessment and the development of positive behavior support interventions for individuals with pervasive developmental disorders. Individuals with pervasive developmental disorders often present with challenging behaviors that interfere with their success in being served in more inclusive settings. Functional assessment of these problematic behaviors is important in the design of effective interventions. A review of assessment procedures will be undertaken and how assessment leads to effective behavior support practices. A demonstration of how a competing pathway model assists in the design of interventions will be illustrated. Case examples will be presented demonstrating the use of these practices to assist in the design of effective and successful interventions.
Session B – Thursday October 29th 9:00 am - 3:45 pmDr. Barb Esch - Assessing and Teaching Language To Learners With ASD: What, How, Where, & WhenThis workshop introduces participants to a behavioral approach to address the unique language and speech needs of learners, regardless of age, with a diagnosis of autism or other developmental disabilities. Based on F. Skinner's behavioral analysis of language and subsequent empirical B.support, a Verbal Behavior (VB) approach has particular benefits in helping learners with severe language delays acquire functional communication skills. The training will cover (1) a behavioral analysis of language skills, introduction to the VB-MAPP (Sundberg, 2008) to assess current skills, (2) select response mode, and determine priority teaching targets for learners with speech and language deficits at the preschool level, and (3) use of error analysis and transfer procedures to correct performance errors and establish new responses from existing language skills. The workshop will present information through didactic instruction and video to enable participants to describe the 3 main components of the VB-MAPP, list common barriers to learning that are often faced by learners with ASD and describe how and why to do an error analysis to inform teaching. This workshop is designed for teachers, speech/language athologists, in-home trainers, therapists, parents, and any other individuals who are interested in applying ABA procedures and an analysis of verbal behavior to speech/language assessment and instruction for learners with a diagnosis of autism or other developmental disabilities.
Session C – Friday October 30th 9:00 am - 12:00 pmDr. Robert Putnam - Teaching Strategies for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the General Education ClassroomThe purpose of this session is to enhance the competencies of participants to increase the amount and quality of general education services provided for students with ASD. This session will focus on the development of effective classroom wide interventions and accommodations, as well as individual student interventions and accommodations to support students with ASD in general education sessions.
Session D – Friday October 30th 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Dr. Barb Esch - Behavioral Treatments for Food Selectivity and Food RefusalThis presentation discusses behavioral treatments for improving intake in individuals with problematic food/liquid selectivity or refusal. Recommended treatments are based on functional assessments and are aimed at making appropriate environmental modifications based on these assessments. Dr. Esch will review empirically based treatments and discuss specific issues regarding these treatments. Participants will be able to discuss the rationale for function-based treatments for food selectivity/refusal and describe several antecedent and consequent interventions for food selectivity/refusal. This workshop is designed for speech/language pathologists, parents, caregivers, and others who are responsible for meeting the nutritional and hydration needs of individuals who demonstrate problematic food/liquid intake.
Session E – Friday October 30th 1:15 pm - 3:45 pmDr. Robert Putnam - Improving Prosocial Skills: Using Social Skills Assessments to Design Effective Social Skills InterventionsStudents with ASD often present with social skills deficits that interfere with their functioning in school, at home and in the community. This session will review various methods of assessing pro-social skills to determine student's current status, priorities for intervention, and ways to monitor progress in social skills instruction. An overview of effective direct social skill instructional strategies including curriculums will be provided. Strategies for teaching and generalizing social skills in general education settings will also be covered. Case examples will be provided to illustrate the use of these skills across school settings.
Session F - Friday October 30th 1:15 pm - 3:45 pmDr. Barb Esch - Helping Johnny Learn To Cope: Solving Issues of Daily Living at Home and in the CommunityChildren with ASD often have difficulty cooperating with adult instructions and learning skills that will increase their independence at home and in the community. This presentation will discuss some causes and practical solutions for problems such as toileting, learning to tolerate waiting rooms (or stores, barbershops, etc), and other issues of concern to parents and teachers. Participants will be able to describe main components of a behaviorally-based toilet training protocol, identify environmental events that maintain uncooperative behavior and describe components in a cooperation training program. This introductory-level presentation is appropriate for parents, caregivers, teachers, therapists and any others who provide instruction in daily living skills to learners who find it difficult to follow instructions or cooperate with adults.
